Resveratrol

Hi everybody, this is the May newsletter. Today I would like to talk about health benefits of resveratrol.

In the past ten years big number of scientific studies have documented the benefits of resveratrol consumption in promotion and maintenance of optimal health. This natural phytochemical  found in the red wine is the key of phenomenon referred to as the “French Paradox”, which correlates the red wine intake with a low incidence of cardiovascular disease mortality, despite high intake of saturated fats.

Beneficial results reported in following areas:

  • Aging-  Resveratrol’s anti-aging and life extension benefits are associated with  activation of the anti-aging genes, sirtuins.
  • Cardiovascular Health- resveratrol’s effects on cardiovascular health are very much broad and will be discussed later.
  • Inflammation- Resveratrol demonstrates inhibition of COX-1 and COX2 , thus signifying an anti-inflammatory effect.
  • Gastrointestinal Health- the same anti-inflammatory properties.
  • Antioxidant- Resveratrol also has been shown to be a potent antioxidant due to it’s ability  to increase cellular content of manganese superoxid dismutase- -enzyme needed for production of one of the most abundant antioxidant in human body-SOD.
  • Menopause –was found to reduce the risk of  breast cancer and bone loss in postmenopausal women.

Anti-aging and Life Extension Benefits

Results of several animal studies over the past several years indicate that resveratrol intake significantly increase life spans. Although no studies have been conducted on long living animals like humans, result of animal studies are impressive, to say at least.

Resveratrol increased life span in yeast in 70%, life span of lab mice in 40%.

The anti-aging effects of resveratrol are believed to be due to activation of sirtuin, anti-aging gene and increasing metabolic rate.  Sirtuin activation was linked to low calorie diet, which is known to increase life span in humans.

Cardiovascular Benefits

Resveratrol promotes cardiovascular health through different range of mechanisms including:
Increases the availability of nitric oxide which relax blood vessels and increases circulation
Acts as a antioxidant
Has an anti-inflammatory effect
Lowers  LDL cholesterol and triglycerides while raising HDL
Inhibit LDL oxidation
Inhibit platelet aggregation
Heart preconditioning with resveratrol reduces the size of myocardial infarction and apoptosis ( cell death) of cardiomyocytes ( heart muscle cells)

These benefits associated with resveratrol’s ability to increase nitric oxide bioavailability
Resveratrol also increases the longevity of myocytes in weakened hearts by activation of sirtuin- anti-aging gene

Antioxidant properties

Resveratrol’s  antioxidant properties associated with it’s  ability to increase the cellular content of manganese superoxid dismutase- the first line of defiance against oxidative stress in  the human body
After  Menopause

Resveratrol has bone protective effects equivalent to hormone replacement therapy and has decreased the risk of breast cancer  in vivo and in vitro. Therefore, resveratrol may be used to prevent and treat osteoporosis without risks of breast cancer development.

Resveratrol also has been shown to inhibit angiogenesis-abnormal formation of new blood vessels,  which is necessary component of tumor growth. Inhibition of  new blood vessels growth will inhibit tumor growth and metastasis.

Dosages and availability

Trans –resveratrol appears well absorbed by the humans when taken orally, but its bioavailability is relatively low due to its rapid metabolism and elimination.

Quercetine may increase resveratrol bioavailability. Try to eat more grapefruits!
Safe dosage range is estimated to be 200mg-2000mg/day.
Resveratrol  reseach is ongoing, to leane more visit Resveratrol  Network www.resveratrol .com and click the “ Resent News”. So, what is the conclusion?   Let’s drink more red wine, take resveratrol and enjoy the coming summer!

I am going to NAET seminar on May15, office will be open until lunch on Friday, I hope to bring a lot of new information  from  Dr. Numbudripad’s  clinic.

With health and nice weather,
Dr. Natalie, resveratrol, specialist
