Hi everybody, fall is started and we can enjoy the golden leaves and the cold blue sky. Today I want to discuss Powerful Pomegranate and its ability to affect our health. Scientist studying pomegranate discovered that it has a lot to offer: it has an array of beneficial phenolic compounds and tannins, which are unique to pomegranate. These nutrients have a profound effect on cardiovascular disease, especially atherosclerosis. Approximately 71 million Americans suffer from cardiovascular disease such as hypertension, coronary artery disease, stroke, and peripheral vascular disease.
Atherosclerosis is a disease of the blood vessels characterized by inflammation of vascular endothelium, impaired nitric oxide production. As a result of the studies it was found that:
Pomegranates Actually Reverses Atherosclerosis
While it is generally accepted that antioxidants can slow atherosclerotic plaque build up, a study from Israel indicates that pomegranate can reduce already existing plaque. Nineteen patients participated in the 3-year study where 10 patients were drinking pomegranate juce-50mg or 1.7 ounces/day, and 9 patients were drinking a placebo beverage. All patients had asymptomatic coronary artery stenosis 70%-90%, and after consumption of pomegranate juice for 12 month patients reduced the thickness of coronary artery wall in 35%. On the other hand, patients on the placebo beverage had an increase of coronary artery wall by 9%.
Lower Blood Pressure
One year of pomegranate supplementation reduced systolic blood pressure by 21%. Pomegranate intake appears to clear so many obstructions in the vascular walls that the blood encounters less resistance, and it gives ability to the heart to pump with less pressure. Pomegranate does not change the levels of serum glucose or HDL/LDL cholesterol, which are standard markers for heart, kidney, liver function, and homocysteine. Although after 12 months of consumption research found a number of improvements:
Total antioxidant status of the blood was increased by 130%.
There was an a 83% increase of specific enzyme activity – this enzyme helps to break up existing plaque- you understand what that means- the blood vessels walls will be thinner, and vessels diameter will be wider. Reduced plaque means reduced potential ability of this blood vessel to have inflammation and clot formation, which is reduced possibility of cardiovascular disease and its complications.
Pomegranate Can Fight Prostate Cancer
Convincing data from animal and human studies support pomegranates ability to fight prostate cancer, where several pomegranate compounds work synergistically to inhibit cancer cell growth.
Pomegranate may also reduce the risk of colon, breast, and lung cancers. It also protects the brain against dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.
Protects against metabolic syndrome and diabetes, and the skin against aging effects of sun.
Progressive Lab offers POMELLA, a Standardized Pomegranate Extract, which is used in functional foods such yogurts, smoothies and in supplements. It has the same ratio of polyphenols as whole pomegranate, and it has neither sugar nor any additives.
Beside pomegranate, you can see a lot of info about acai berry and mangosteen, both very potent antioxidants which both have ability to inhibit COX-1, COX-2, which are inflammatory enzymes. Mangosteen is generally referred as a super fruit, however the inside of the fruit has little of nutritional value, it is the peel that provides all xanthones, tannins, and other antioxidants. It has anti-inflammatory, anti-allergic and anti-convulsant properties. Red grapes now have super fruit status too due to their presence of resveratrol, which particulary in the red grapes skins, has anti-aging properties. Most resveratrol used in nutritional supplements is now made from Japanese knotweed, which is a much more concentrated source of resveratrol. Now, you can enjoy red grapes and not feel guilty!
