Recent studies have shown that Lutein and Zeaxanthin , well known for protecting the eyes, also boost factors involved in brain function such as cognitive function, memory and recall. The effects of these plant-based nutrients have been shown in young people and older adults- even those with early cognitive decline. Lutein and zeaxanthin are carotenoid pigments present in egg yolks and green leafy vegetables, also in some vegetables colored in yellow and red.Cooked kale and cooked spinach are the most rich sources of zeaxanthin and lutein.

Recent studies have shown that supplementation with 10mg of Lutein and 2 mg of Zeaxanthin daily improved brain function in participants. Supplementation with these carotenoids may help people with Cataracts, Diabetic Retinopathy, Age Related Macular Degeneration ( they accumulate mostly in macular), and impaired cognitive function.
